HRiday along with Team Horizons organized the HR summit on October 7, on the third and final day of the annual management conclave of IIM K, Horizons 2007. It had a panel discussion on the topic “Emerging trends in Strategic HR” under a broader theme of “Bharat, Ek Khoj”. The event saw speakers across various different domains and backgrounds giving their views and insights on the topic. The speakers included Mr. Narayanan Nair, VP - HR, Mphasis; Mr. Sheen Sunny Akarra, Director, Resource Management, Deloitte Consulting and Mr. Balasubramaniam, retired head clerk and Union leader at State Bank of India who is also a teacher of disciplinary procedures in trade union colleges.

Prof T N Krishnan, a member of the faculty in the HR area at IIM Kozhikode, presided as the moderator of the panel discussion. The discussion started with Prof Krishnan giving his insights and areas that could be covered under the topic. The discussion gave some very enlightening insights into the various aspects of HR in the present scenario. Some of the major aspects discussed were the increased importance of talent retention, the change in the workforce characteristics, need for succession planning and job rotation in the present scenario. He stressed on the availability of jobs and attributed the unemployment to the lack of employability and the companies’ reach to the location of talent. “It is the pace of change and not just change that you as managers would have to deal with” was one of the catchy statements made by Mr. Narayanan Nair. Mr. Narayanan Nair highlighted the importance of job rotation owing to plateauing of careers and the present workforce’s need to grow. He put it very beautifully saying that every time he recruits he feels insecure because the people he is recruiting are better than he is. He however does not sit behind rather explores opportunities to enhance his learning so that his career or learning does not get stagnant at any point. He also discussed various models followed at Mphasis and other organizations he had previously worked with.

Mr. Balasubramaniam who had great expertise in the domain of Industrial Relations, being a union leader at SBI gave us an insight into how IR has evolved over the years in the banking industry and what implications does it hold for today’s banking scenario. He also vividly described the difference in the words in the offer letters in Indian and American contexts. In India, an offer letter would read – “You’re appointed” whereas in America, it would read – “You’re Hired” thus implying the likelihood of being fired when the fit between the organization and the employee is not evident. He briefly described the links between the trade unions and the political parties and its repercussions. He also discussed how the advent of private banks like ICICI and HDFC has changed the scenario. He believed that SBI undoubtedly would remain the biggest bank in India. His session was very informative in terms of seeing the IR scenario from the other side’s perspective. From the perspective of “Inclusive growth”, he spoke of the importance of addressing the needs of the masses.

img_3189.jpgMr. Sheen Sunny Akkara highlighted on the similarities and differences in HR today vis-a-vis twenty years ago. He explained how it has shifted from being a support function to a decision maker. He also discussed how talent crunch remains the biggest problem for HR managers. Another key idea brought out by him was how every employee forms the part of human resource management and not just HR managers thus bringing out the concept of “Self development”. The process of thinking was given importance and Mr. Sheen laid emphasis on the need for thought leaders in India. He encouraged an interactive session with the students and students actively participated in the discussion. The session was concluded by Prof Krishnan highlighting the issues raised by the speakers and the main thoughts discussed. It was a very enlightening session for the students of IIM Kozhikode and would aid in clarifying the role of human resource management.
