Chances are that if
you’re reading this article, you’re relatively serious about the impending CAT.
With only a handful of days to go before you nervously walk into the exam hall
– pen, pencils et al – what should you be doing to ensure that you emerge
victorious when the dust finally settles?
We’ve always been told
that CAT is not an exam you can prepare for; that the skills of ‘time
management’, ‘uncertainty management’ and ‘quick decision-making’ that it tests
can only be imbibed over a period of time, a lifetime perhaps. Yet there are
certain other insights that come only with regular practice. For those of us
already warmed up and nearing sprint speed in preparation, it is the time to
keep the tempo going and deliver peak performance on D-day. But is all lost for
those who aren’t in the preparation groove yet? Not yet, not yet. So, whether
you’re high on planning and aim to run your best race on Nov 18, or if your
preparation is languishing but you know you can deliver, read on for some tips
that will help you prepare better as you pace up for the last lap.
As per past formats,
you can expect the following sections:
Verbal: Make sure
that you don’t give up on the reading habit just because the exam is nearing.
Identify your scoring areas, stick to your strategy and remain confident. While
fine-tuning the way you approach RCs is important, frequent chopping and
changing of styles will not really get you anywhere at this stage.
Go over your word list
continually, if you’ve prepared or used one. For verbal usage questions, make
sure that you practice from old CAT papers or mock tests everyday for at least
30 minutes. Tackling para-jumbles and verbal reasoning questions require a
certain amount of familiarity; make sure not to lose it.
Quant: The key
towards cracking the quant section is to attempt the right kind of questions.
Hence it is very important to brush up your fundamentals in Time, speed and
distance, Geometry, Number Theory and Ratios and Proportions. While you can
always choose to attempt questions in one particular topic that you favor, an
overall idea on all the concepts might be important since from the recent CAT
editions, we can conclude that the questions asked are no longer straight
forward, but instead involve a combination of different topics. Always analyze
all mock CAT quant questions thoroughly to see how you could have done them
differently.
DI: In recent
years, this section has seen a gradual change from data-oriented caselets to
logic-oriented caselets. Typically, one could expect 4-5 caselets in DI with
5-6 questions each. With a month to go for CAT, any aspirant would be
well-advised to practice different kinds of caselets to ensure that there no
surprises while belling the CAT. In addition, it’s also worth the while to
glance through the DI section of all the practice tests that one has taken.
Mentally picture what strategy to adopt for each keeping in mind mistakes
you’ve made in the past, this should help you feel better prepared.
The last month is the
time to consolidate; to fine tune your strategy and squeeze the maximum results
from your effort. At this stage, the
motto, ‘Practice makes you perfect’, cannot be understated. May the force be
with you!
