A report by research firm Indicus Analytics has reaffirmed what the IIM Kozhikode community has known for so long - Kozhikode is one of India’s Best cities to live in. According to the report  the best cities to reside are Kochi, Kozhikode, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram, Mysore, Goa, Thrissur, Pondicherry, Kannur and Thiruvalur. The parameters used to rank the cities were - health, education, environment, safety, public facilities and entertainment.

kappadbeach1.jpgKozhikode (pronounced 'Korry-korr'), and previously known as Calicut, is the third-largest city in the state of Kerala. The capital of the erstwhile Malabar district, Kozhikode city is the headquarters of the Kozhikode district. A melting-pot of diverse cultures, Kozhikode is an important trade centre in South India, for long associated with the trade of spices and silk. Today, Kozhikode is famous for its palm fringed beaches, tropical forests, and Ayurvedic therapy, and of course, IIM Kozhikode!
The City is 15 km from the campus, and one needs to go there to access the amazing variety restaurants, cafes, bakeries, bookshops, museums, temples, movie theatres etc. The main shopping district is along Mavoor Road, the commercial hub of the city. There is a long esplanade along the city beach that one can walk on. A few kilometers north is Kappad beach, the place where Vasco da Gama landed in 1498. The roads to the city are excellent, and can be called some of the best in India. A few kilometers south of Kozhikode is Beypore, the ancient shipyard where ships have been constructed for over a thousand years. Around the city one can find many lagoons, or ‘Backwaters’ as they are better known. Several resorts have come up on the banks. Kaduavu resort is one such in Kozhikode district.

Kozhikode is a spectacularly green city, with trees and woods everywhere and has the some of the lowest pollution levels in the country. It is also one of the cleanest cities in India, with no garbage and stray animals, nor beggars  and low in crime. The old world bakeries here still make scones, macaroons and jam tarts, and there are other delectable delights waiting to surprise you all around the city. The townsfolk are friendly and helpful, and the city abounds with culture. It is one of those cities that anyone can fall in love with - with its quaint by lanes and old houses, history seeping in every nook and cranny.

So what are you waiting for? Kozhikode is calling. Come to the best. Cool ......

What a stupid explanation Santhosh has given to the name Kozhikode. It has nothing to do with hen or chicken. Calicut is the anglicised form of Kalikut, the Arabic for the Malayalam, Kozhikode. It is also called the Cock Fort. According to the historian, K.V.Krishnan Iyer, the term means Koyil (palace) Kodu (fortified). Pls check official web sites before posting these kind of stupidity.

After spending 14 years of my career in North India, I was posted to North -East,but I was surprised to see a colleague from Bihar posted there talking to me in excellent Malayalam. Later, I came to know that he was an alumnus of NIT Calicut . That is the effect these reputed institutions like NIT and IIM have brought to these students who spent their academic life at Calicut. Wishing all the best for these institutions and the City of Calicut, where I had the opportunity to spend one year of my career.

Kozhikode is not pronounced as 'Korry-korr' in Malayalam. It pronounced as 'Koyikode'. 'Kozhi' in Malayalam means Rooster and 'kode' means place. In northern Kerals 'Kozhi' is pronouced 'Koyi'. In the past this place had plenty of waterhen (Amaurornis phoenicurus)thus the name. Waterhen is called 'Kulakkozhi' in Malayalam.

I do not agree with you "the road to the city are excellent" they are not that excellent now.

I fully agree with you insaying that one of the best cities to livin in India is Calicut. Because of the complete neglect by the state government and central governement after Malabar was detatched from earlier Madras Province the only concentration was on Cochin and Trivandrum. Of course some people from outside state Like late Sri P.M sayed, Mr C.K.Ibrahim(karnataka) have done some thing
Further Calicut is not the old name even now also many locals forget about foreginers and outsiders convenintlyuse Calicut also
Railway an continue to use just like Angamaly (Kalady)Kozhikode (Calicut) for the benefit of the incresing number of visotrs from oursided Kerala to CALICUt No body can undervalue the status of Calicut as it was known to the entire world time imme immemorial
Let us continue to have pleasantries and sweet memories of the Proud and heritage of the Business centre CALICUT which was known as the PORT of TRUTH in the entire world NOW CLEAN GREN CALICUT
