The Social Services Group (SSG), IIM Kozhikode, organized Grass Roots 2008 at the IIM-K campus. Grass Roots 2008 is an attempt by the SSG to improve the interaction of the students with the local community so as to help SSG direct their efforts towards serving the local community better.

The SSG was also successful in having noted personalities like Mr. Zakkeer, the president of Malabar Chamber of Commerce, the family of Mr. Jang Pangi (IPS), Additional Director General of Police, Northern Region, Calicut, Mr. B. K. Upadhyay (IPS), Commissioner of Police, Calicut, Mr. Raj Mohan, Superintendent of Police, Crime Branch, Calicut, and renowned film maker Mr. P. V. Gangadharan participate in the event.

"The participation of such leaders of the community would help SSG broaden the scope of its work and create a platform for SSG to interact with socially-inclined organizations and people, thus laying the ground for future collaboration," said Ajith, a member of the SSG.

As a part of Grass Roots 2008, campus tours were organized for the visitors, wherein they were shown around the scenic campus and the academic area. Various stalls for food and games were organized to entertain the visitors in between the tours. The grand finale of the event was a magic show by Gopinath Muthukad, the famous magician whose unique motto of 'Magic with a Mission' entails using magic as a tool to spread virtuous ideals among people. Mr. Muthukad's show of magic enthralled the more than 1,200 visitors, leaving them wanting more and ended the event on a memorable note.

Grass Roots 2008 was sponsored by Sadbhavana World School, IMS and KVR Motors.

The concept of palliative care is new to India and is gaining acceptance by the day. The Pain and Palliative Care Centre whose main office is in the Calicut Medical College has done pioneering work in this field. SSG has been providing support to ‘Ashrayam pain and palliative care centre’ located in Kunnamangalam.  Our association with the pain and palliative care centre is almost one year old and so far we have donated Rs 27000/- to the organization for the purchase of medicines for 36 chronically ill patients. The money provided by SSG is used for purchase of medicines such as Paracetamol, Metrandiozl and Asprin and things like urine bags. Apart from that,, our group members and volunteers have been visiting the patients as part of the weekly ''home visit'' to these patient’s houses. Though we have started supporting the organization through monetary donations, the greater aim would be to generate awareness about the issue in the society and help people adopt this relatively new concept so that the local chapters of this organization can find support from the community

Meal a Month Print
Written by Social Services Group
Tuesday, 06 November 2007
“Meal a month” is one another innovative scheme that we came out with in the year 2007 to meet social causes. Under the present scheme, the members of the IIMK student community donate the equivalent of a meal every month towards the fund needed for social initiatives. Besides serving the obvious purpose of fund collection, the scheme also presents an opportunity to the students of IIMK to come together and do their little bit for noble causes. The overwhelming response that the scheme has received so far only goes on to exemplify the inclination that IIMK students have towards helping out the not so privileged others, which is the hallmark of our institution. .
